CHAPTER ONE: A BURNING WHAKARAU
Māui stares into the flickering flames and wonders
where fire comes from. He extinguishes the fires of
all of the villages to find out.

CHAPTER TWO: MAHUIKA
Māui heads to the mountains in search of Mahuika's
cave. He finds the female good and takes fire from
her burning fingernails. He tricks her by extinguishing
them all until there is only one left.

CHAPTER THREE: KAI A TE AHI
Mahuika is fuelled by rage after Māui's trickery is
uncovered. She tosses her last nail at him and sets
the forest ablaze. Māui shifts into a kahu and flees
to the skies, asking Tāwhirimātea for rain to put the
fires out. He returns to his village and demonstrates
making fire through sticks, the flames of Mahuika
now forever imbued in the wood from the trees of the
forest.
